Vanilla pudding powder
Cornflour flavoured with vanilla and usually tinted yellow, which sets into a pudding or cream when boiled with milk and sugar.
In German-speaking countries and Hungary it is in every supermarket, usually in sachets for half a litre of milk; in the English-speaking world the closest match is British custard powder, found in supermarkets or Eastern European shops.
Substitute:
Custard powder swaps in directly, as does about 35 g of cornflour with vanilla seeds or extract per sachet, minus the yellow colour; American instant pudding mix does not work, because it sets differently and is already sweetened.
