sweet yeast bread
A sweet braided yeast bread made with milk, butter and eggs, with a soft, tender crumb.
Kalács is the Hungarian counterpart of the German Hefezopf, a lightly sweetened braided loaf made from a yeast dough enriched with milk, butter and eggs. In German-speaking countries it is sold in almost every bakery and supermarket, while in English-speaking countries brioche or challah, found in larger supermarkets and bakeries, are the closest equivalents.
Substitute:
Brioche works well but is richer in butter and slightly softer; challah is usually less sweet and often made without butter, though its crumb is similarly tender.
