paprika paste

A paste of ground red peppers and salt, mild and sweetish or hot depending on the kind.

Paprika paste is sold in Eastern European shops and in Turkish grocers as pepper paste (biber salçası, mild or hot), and can also be ordered online. In some supermarkets it turns up in tubes.

Substitute:

Turkish pepper paste comes closest, though it is often thicker and less salty, so go easier on the salt. At a pinch, stir sweet paprika powder into tomato paste; that gives the colour and paprika flavour, but tastes more acidic and less fruity.
