Kifli (crescent roll)

Hungarian crescent roll made from a plain yeast dough with a little milk and fat, soft and mild, not flaky like a croissant.

Kifli is a crescent rolled from a triangle of wheat yeast dough, a close relative of the Austrian Kipferl and the German milk or pretzel crescent. In German-speaking countries similar rolls are found at bakeries and Eastern European shops; in English-speaking countries they turn up more often in Eastern European bakeries than in supermarkets.

Substitute:

Soft milk rolls or plain white wheat rolls match the crumb and flavour well; a croissant is too buttery and flaky and falls apart when it has to be soaked.
